Tour Overview
This 4-day, 3-night trip takes you from Marrakesh across the High Atlas Mountains to the Sahara dunes at Merzouga and back again. You travel in a private vehicle with a driver, stopping at Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate on the way out, and passing through Dades Gorge and Todra Gorge on day two. The middle of the trip is spent in the desert. You ride a camel into the Sahara, spend the evening at camp with a campfire, traditional music and stargazing, and stay a second night there. The full day in the Merzouga area includes fossil sites, a visit with a Berber nomad family, mint tea and time on the dunes, with optional quad biking. The pace is driving-heavy at the start and end, with the desert days set around sunset and sunrise. Day four returns via Alnif, Agdz, the Draa River, Ouarzazate and Telouet to Marrakesh.
Our take
This is a driver-led journey with a lot of road time, so plan for long days in the vehicle. Quad biking is optional, and the stays are a traditional guest house on night one and a desert camp on nights two and three.
Who it's for
The trip suits young adults and families who are happy to spend long stretches in a vehicle in exchange for time in the desert. It is less suited to anyone who dislikes long drives, an early start or a camel ride.
